Giorgio Piola knew that the Ligier was faster in a straight line because there was a trick - something illegal in the side pots, but was always impossible to see because every time the car was stopped in the pit lane and the bodywork was taken off from the side ports, the mechanic was covering the lower section of the radiator.
Piola remembers the day he finally understood what the team was up to, following a crash in Friday practice:
I realized immediately that the officials took the car to the garage, so I ran off to the garage and saw the car completely in pieces and also the detail of covers opening with the pressure of the air and reducing the downforce on the straight, so increasing the top speed.
